Four Tips When You Feel Overwhelmed by Caregiving
It’s admirable for you to want to do more as a caregiver, but that can very quickly get out of hand if you’re not careful. You may find that you’re overwhelmed and nothing you do seems to be enough. It doesn’t have to be that way.
Do What You Can Do
Lots of times caregivers are concerned about all that has to be done and second guess themselves. If you’re doing that, it’s time for you to cut yourself some slack. Do what you can do and avoid telling yourself that you should be doing more or that you should be doing things differently. When you focus on what’s right in front of you instead of trying to solve all the problems all at once, your perspective shifts.
Reach out for Help
It’s really difficult to ask for help, especially if you feel as if you should be able to handle it all. But the reality is that you’re only one person. You can’t do everything, no matter how efficient you are. If you haven’t already, it might be time for you to look into bringing elderly care providers on as part of your support team. They can help your senior with a variety of different tasks, which takes those off your plate and frees you up to handle other things.
Check Your Social Interactions
When you’re not taking care of yourself socially, that can create some bigger problems than you expect. You need to be spending time with people you care about beyond your senior. If you don’t, you run the risk of letting yourself become isolated and that’s a dangerous situation. It doesn’t take much for you to interact more with the people you care about in your life. Reach out via text message if that’s all you have time for and pledge to try to increase your social interactions as you can.
Set Aside Time Just for You
Once you’re putting some of these other tips into action, you may find that you’re able to start thinking about respite time. Elderly care providers can handle whatever comes up with your senior while you spend some time just taking care of yourself. This is a perfect time to spend time face to face with people you love.
When you stop neglecting your own needs you’re going to find that it’s much easier to meet your senior’s needs, too. It sounds impossible, but it’s true.
