What Exactly Are You Going to Do Now that You’ve Lined up Respite Care?
Once you’ve taken that step to line up respite care, you might be a little perplexed about what you’re going to do with it. The simple answer is that you can do anything that you want. If you still need ideas, try one of these.
Take a Nap
How are you sleeping? If your answer is “not well,” then you might benefit from a nap. You don’t have to take a really long one to benefit, either. Sometimes a short nap is enough to help you catch up a little bit on the sleep you’re missing. If your sleep schedule is in really bad shape, talk to your doctor about it to rule out other problems.
Read a Book
Reading a book just for fun is one of life’s best distractions. If the book is really good, you can temporarily forget about reality and the demands on your time from every angle. Having a little while to yourself so you can just float away on a great piece of friction may be just what you need.
Do Nothing
This is underrated in today’s busy world, but who says you have to really do anything? The average caregiver is constantly doing something. Usually multiple somethings all at once, too. Try taking a little while literally doing absolutely nothing and see how it feels for you. You may find that it allows you to clear your brain enough to feel refreshed afterward.
Go Exercise
If you hate exercising, this one might not feel like a great suggestion. But having a regular timeframe in which you can exercise unimpeded is really important for you as a caregiver. It relieves stress, can help you sleep better, and can help you to be in better physical health. All of these benefits are things that you need very much as a caregiver.
Go to Your Own Doctor
It’s probably time to make and keep an appointment with your own doctor. Most caregivers tend to overlook their own appointments, even when they’re on target with their senior’s every appointment. Your own health is incredibly important to your ability to continue to be a caregiver, so take it seriously.
You don’t really need to have a plan at all for your respite time. You might use it religiously to go to caregiver support group meetings or you might meet a different friend for lunch every week. It’s your time to do whatever you want with at your leisure, so enjoy it.
