5 Resolutions for Caregivers
The new year has begun. If you’re the type of person to make resolutions (or even if you’re not), have you considered making some resolutions regarding your role as a family caregiver? If not, perhaps you should. At a loss for what kinds of resolutions you could make? Below are 5 ideas for resolutions for caregivers.
#1: I will take care of my health.
Caregivers have a tendency to forget about their own health needs because they are busy taking care of their elderly family member. They stop worrying about that nagging symptom they are experiencing because they are too worried about what the senior is going through. If that sounds familiar to you, this resolution is definitely for you. Resolve to see your doctor on a regular basis. Resolve to find time to exercise. Resolve to eat healthy meals. When you take care of yourself, you can continue to be there for your older family member.
#2: I will join a caregiver support group.
If you’re struggling with the emotions of being a caregiver, resolve to join a caregiver support group. A support group is a place where you can talk to others about how you’re feeling. Members of the group can offer practical tips and emotional support because they are also caregivers and understand your situation. You can find a caregiver support group by conducting an online search, contacting your local hospital or senior center, or asking a clergy person.
#3: I will make time for me.
Caregivers often spend all of their time between working, family responsibilities, and caregiving duties. They may not find any time to do the things they enjoy. By resolving to make time for yourself, you can look after your emotional health. Schedule time each week to do something you enjoy, such as engaging in a hobby, going for a walk, or seeing a movie.
#4: I will socialize with friends and family.
If you haven’t had much time to spend with friends and family members who support you and lift you up, this resolution is an important one. Make time each week to spend with other people. Schedule a coffee date, go out for lunch, or just chat on the phone. In addition, use social media for short breaks during the day to keep up with what’s going on in the lives of the people you love.
#5: I will find someone to help me with caregiver duties.
If you’re feeling especially overwhelmed, make a resolution to get some help. Ask family members if they can take over some of your caregiver time or tasks. If you don’t have family members that can help, consider contacting a home care agency and hiring help.
